Timeline View

A date axis for one project. The Calendar answers what is happening this week; the Timeline answers what ships this quarter and what is slipping.

todo · overdue

One bar per work item, from the day it was opened to the day it is due. The vertical line is today.

Opening it

  1. Open a project.
  2. In the project tab bar — Overview · Board · Backlog · Calendar · Timeline · Tasks · Files · Integrations — choose Timeline.

Timeline is a normal route, so it can be bookmarked and pasted into a message like any other project view. It is scoped to a single project; there is no cross-project roll-up.

How to read a bar

Bar span

A bar runs from when the work item was created to its due date — the window the work has actually been open for. Hovering shows both dates.

Axis and today

The axis stretches from the earliest bar to the latest due date, with a minimum span of two weeks so a single item does not fill the screen. A vertical line marks today.

Slippage

Any item whose due date is in the past and whose status is not Done is labelled overdue under its title. That is the list to work through in a planning review.

Bar colour is the work item status: To Do is neutral grey, In Progress uses the primary accent, In Review is amber, Done is green. Colour is never the only signal — the status is also written out next to the title.

Rescheduling

Each row ends in a date field. Pick a new date and the bar moves; the change is written to the work item straight away, so the board, calendar and every other view agree with it immediately. If the write fails the bar snaps back — the timeline never shows a date the server did not accept.

  • Clearing the date removes the bar and moves the item into the “No due date” list underneath.
  • Scheduling from that list works the same way: set a date and the item appears on the axis.
  • There is no drag gesture. A work item stores a due date, not a start date, so dragging a bar would have to invent a start. Editing the date is the honest control.

Why an old work item shows a long bar

The left edge is the creation date. An item that was filed months ago and is due next week renders a long bar — that is the age of the request, not an estimate of the effort.

What appears on the timeline

  • Parent work items and their subtasks both get their own row, so a dated subtask is never silently missing.
  • Only items with a due date are drawn. Everything else is listed under “No due date”, with a count, so it is visible rather than lost.
  • Trashed work never appears — see Trash & restore.

Empty is not the same as broken

If nothing in the project has a due date the view says “Nothing scheduled yet”. If the work items could not be loaded it says so and offers Retry. The two states are deliberately distinct — an empty timeline is never a silent failure.

Plans and permissions

Timeline is part of the project view on both Pro ($10 per seat / month) and Scale ($29 per seat / month); there is no separate entitlement and no extra charge. Guests can open it and read it but cannot reschedule anything — the date field refuses their write. See Guests & sharing.
